MURNAU

Murnau is a beautiful market town right on lake Staffelsee, located about 65 km south of Munich, in Bavaria / Germany.

Summer is particularly suitable for outdoor activities: hike on one of the numerous hiking trails through the mountains, take the opportunity to swim in the picturesque Staffelsee or explore the many shops and cafés in town.

Many art museums and art exhibitions in the city and the surrounding area offer an exciting program for many art enthusiasts.

Murnau became world famous through the painter Wassily Kandinsky, who lived together with Gabriele Münter from 1909 to 1914. Together with Franz Marc they founded in Murnau the expressionist artists' association "Blauer Reiter".

Also artists Marianne von Werefkin and Alexej Jawlensky stayed in Murnau at the same time.

Through their pictures of Murnau and its scenery, which they continued to paint until 1914, the market town became famous to a worldwide art audience. In the history of art, this period before the First World War is called the "Murnau Era".

This period is directly connected to these artists and marks stylistically the development from expressionism to abstract art. Today, the Münter-Haus ("Russian House“), where Münter moved in 1909 with Kandinsky, is one of the most prominent cultural attractions of Murnau; as is also the Castle Museum with its art collection.
